”100 Years of Violations” Silk, wood, automatic writing, 2 x 300x300 cm. 2015 Installation view from the exhibition ”Våbenhvile. 100 Års Forestillinger”, Overgaden - Institute of Contemporary Art, Copenhagen 5 / 6-9 / 8 - 2015.

100 Years of Violations
This work was made especially for the exhibition ”Våbenhvile. 100 års Forestillinger” (Truce. 100 Years of Imaginations), an exhibition acknowledging the 100th anniversary of women's right to vote in Denmark.

The works is about the continuing number of sexual abuse and rape that happens in Denmark every single day.

I have worked with *automatic writing to give ”voices” to unheard victims of rape and have included fragments from a major rapport on sexual abuse in Denmark, outlining various elements of the crime e.g. how the perpetrator got contact with the victim, different kind of crime scenes, what kind of sexual abuse and how the perpetrator prevented the victim to report the crime.

*Automatic writing is a literary method that involves what comes out of the unconscious or from external forces. The idea is to "create" without aesthetic and moral considerations. The technique was first used in spiritualism, but has since been used by the Surrealists and artists such as Susan Hiller (US/UK 1940) and is also being used as a therapeutic tool.
