“My mother’s abortion: pain – silenced (the gift)”, applicated fabric, embroidery, oil paint, pearls, pencil, wood. 193x155x2 cm. 2017.

My mother’s abortion: pain – silenced (the gift)
When I was a child, my mother told me about the abortion she had a few years after giving birth to me. She told me about the process of applying for an abortion due to health reasons before there was free abortion in Denmark, she also told me about the failure of the women from an all-female organization who was supposed to help her, instead they saw her as a privileged woman, who should give birth to her 5th child against her doctor’s advice.

It was a story that made a huge impression on me as a child, I remember the feelings of helplessness and later due to my ongoing trauma work, did I think about how a person’s trauma is inherited in a family. I also think about how oral history often get lost, someone has to give voice to the experience.

I see this as a gift for my mother and all other women who have suffered due to the ethical, moral and legal suppression they have experienced.
