In August 2012 did I go back to Margate, for the first time since 1985, where I lived nearby for half a year, studying english, acting and singing, which more or less all failed for me. I had dropped out of The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts after one year of study, to pursue my dream of becoming an actor in the UK.
I lived in the smaller town Ramsgate and every week did I go to Margate for acting and singing lessons. Margate is the weirdest place on earth, a town totally run down, waiting desperately for something to happen, for a better tomorrow, a better life.
The only one who could lure me back to Margate, was Tracey Emin, who had a beautiful show at Turner Contemporary. Tracey also “came back” to Margate, her home-town as a kind of middle-age homecoming queen, conquering her past.
I was in the strangest mood, my mom had just died one month earlier, the grief and pain of losing her and the confrontation of all my past failures was overwhelming.
But being with Tracey’s work, I sat down…sighed and thought, maybe after all, there is a place where I can breathe…
